A Bulgarian research institute with more than 50 years of experience in electrochemistry and energy systems has developed an innovative electrode mass of zinc electrode applicable for alkaline rechargeable batteries. The institute is looking for commercial agreements with technical assistance with interested companies for the implementation of the innovation.

Description     

The Bulgarian research institute has more than 50 years of experience in the research and development in the field of electrochemisty. In the recent years it has developed novel approaches and technologies in the field of hydrogen generation and storage, metal-hydrides, fuel cells, low cost intercalation compounds and nanostructured composite materials for batteries and others. The institute has experience in international joint projects and implementation of technologies in the industry.

 

The popularity of cordless portable devices, such as power tools, has increased the needs and requirements for high energy density rechargeable batteries that can also deliver high power. As power and energy density requirements increase, the need for a high cycle life rechargeable electrode also increases. The alkaline zinc electrode is known for its high voltage, low equivalent weight and low cost. The fast electrochemical kinetics associated with the charge and discharge process enables the zinc electrode to deliver both high power and high energy density.

 

The invention relates to a negative electrode mass of zinc electrode for alkaline rechargeable batteries used as power sources in portable mechanical and microelectronic devices and communication tools. According to the invention, the electrode weight of the negative zinc electrode consisting of powdered zinc and zinc compounds and compounds of metals having a high overvoltage of hydrogen release, binders, and contains an additive of the cuprate superconducting ceramics. Adding of 1 to 15 % cuprate superconducting ceramic type bismuth - strontium - calcium - copper - oxygen (BSCCO) 2201, 2212, 2223 or yttrium (or rare earth) - barium - copper - oxide 123 (Y (RE) 123) improves bulk conductivity and the structure of the zinc electrode, the gas release decreases when charging electrode, which has a favourable effect on the resilience capacity and prolongs the life of the electrode. This removes the need for use of wiring electrode weight additions of carbon materials, as well as, to reduce the amount of compounds of the metals with a high overvoltage to hydrogen evolution. Zinc electrode with active mass containing supplement of superconducting cuprate ceramics can be used as a negative electrode in alkaline rechargeable and foremost - for nickel-zinc batteries.
