A Spanish engineering company has developed a new low-carbon system for producing hydrogen, mainly based on production of H2-gas, from liquid or liquefied organic bio and non-biodegradable waste, to be transformed into electricity through cogeneration or to obtain a pure H2 by purification techniques. Industrial partners are sought for commercial agreement with technical assistance.

 

Description     

A Spanish SME working in energy and environment has developed an innovative system called biohydrogas that allows the conversion of organic waste (liquid or liquefied, biodegradable or non-biodegradable) into hydrogen, which can be subsequently transformed into electricity through cogeneration or used to obtain pure hydrogen through purification techniques.

A supercritical water gasification technology is used, so that when it surpasses its critical temperature and pressure it acquires extraordinary properties and different from those in its liquid or gaseous state, becoming a powerful gasifying agent. Taking advantage of this characteristic, different types of carbonaceous residues can be gasified with the objective of obtaining hydrogen.

According to the company’s experience, all the waste can be gasified working in a temperature range between 550 and 650ºC, in a pressure range between 240 and 400 bar, and with a residence time of 4 minutes.

The technology is versatile in terms of the type of raw material to be treated. Carbon content in its structure is sufficient and it can also have high moisture content. It is also attractive in terms of introducing hydrogen, being able to obtain between 5 and 20 kg of H2 from 100 kg of raw material according to the lower heat of combustion of the waste, and all of this in a reactor of small dimensions.

Comparing biohydrogas with the current technology of potential customers such as paper producers, farms and producers of used oils, in an anaerobic biodigestion plant, for producing the same 500kWe, the slurry flow is almost 40% smaller with the biohydrogas, with a reactor 3,500 times smaller and with a residence time of 4 minutes versus the 30 days required with the anaerobic biodigestion. In the case of paper producers, to produce the same 2 MW, with biohydrogas 30% less black liquor is needed, with the reactor 750 times smaller.

The company would like to reach commercial agreements with technical assistance with potential users of the technology. These could be industrial companies producing organic liquid waste, like wastewater treatment plants, dairy industries, tanneries, paper industries, etc.

 

Type and Role of Partner Sought    

Industrial partners in sectors producing organic liquid waste (paper industry, dairy, leather, wastewater treatment) are sought for commercial agreements with technical assistance. The partner sought will be a user of the technology under the support of the Spanish SME.
